BRANDING ADVENTURES FULL!

Right, so, ummm…I guess you want me to offer branding adventures.  ::ahem::

If you’ll be kind enough to e-mail kristen@essentialimagery.com with title ‘I’ll wait for branding, baby!’ I’ll keep you posted as to if and when any spots open up or when/if I take further clients.  Again, no promises!  (Or even vague yet seductive hints of promises!)

Thanks to those of you who contacted me, I’ll get back to you shortly.  Waaaahooo!

ADVENTURE TIME!

Just when you think life is full enough, you need to have an adventure.  So, in response to the growing mail pile of polite questions about when/if/how people can hire me to consult about their brand/branding/brand strategy — the answer is “Yes.”  “Yes, but I’m only taking on three of you.  And if I don’t like it, then I’m just gonna stick to this blogging for the masses thing.”

Okay?  Okay.  There are three spots, $300 each.  I’ll send you a questionaire about your biz and your branding, go over everything you throw at me with a fine-toothed comb, submit a branding report to you, and have a follow-up chat about 30 minutes long with you to sort out any final questions you might have.

If you’re like ‘Ohmigod, yah but, no but…ugh!  I don’t wanna pay for branding consultation!’– fear not.  Regular blog posts will still be yours. (Thanks for reading!)  But if you’d like to ask me burning questions or get your brand moving in a different direction, hit up kristen@essentialimagery.com with subject line ‘Brand Me, Baby!’  and we can talk.

NAMES, AGAIN.

So, here’s the deal: you’ve hung your head in shame and/or realized your biz name isn’t quite working like you’d hoped.

Option 1: Leave it as is, with a few tweaks.

Let’s say you didn’t start as a husband & wife photography team, but you’ve evolved.  The easiest one is to pull a Jasmine Star.  Though the business bears only her name, she’s very clear about the fact that her husband JD second shoots with her, pointing out which shots are hers and which shots are his.  Simple, effective, and lawyer-free.

Option 2: Tweak the name.

If you were Holly Hockenberry Photography, getting clients to accept Holly & Peter Hockenberry Photography as a name isn’t too much of a jump.  A gradual branding transition with the understand that ‘Holly Hockenberry Photography’ is going to show up on credit card statements, etc…isn’t too big a deal.

Option 3: Add a branch.

You’ll most likely need to talk to your lawyer about logistics for this one!  If you’d like to, say, add a boudoir branch to your business called Big Busted Babes, buy the domain name.  Build a brand, and leave your other brand AS IS.  Yes, as is.  This is like creating an entirely new business, but its niche quality prevents you from having to re-educate clients about your identity.  It’s not a rebrand, it’s a NEW brand!

Option 4: Tank it and build anew.

You’re over it, and you never want to see Teenytoodles Photography on anything, ever again.  This is going to be a process, but the very first thing you need to do is SPEAK WITH A LAWYER.  Don’t google it, don’t look for the cheap ‘legal consultant’ on Craigslist, just hire a lawyer for a consultation.  Talk really fast, if you have to, but do it.

The branding part of a name change is going to require a new website domain name with a redirect in place from the old website, and some pretty hardy client education.  E-mail blasts, Facebook announcements, blog posts, and/or a ‘name change party’ at your studio may all be in order.  Make it a celebration, not a chore, and your clients will celebrate with you.

aarghhh we are going through this for exactly the reasons outlined in no. 1 …and now can’t even agree on the two logos we have had designed….after countless hours of looking at them, I want to crawl into a hole. For any readers thinking about your business name….get a business plan first! that would be my BEST advice…make it a long term plan and really think about what and who you might be working with in 10 years.

DOPE, SOAP, AND HOPE

This blog can be a bit of a downer in the name of motivation. I know it. I know it!

Luckily, Zack Arias, god of One Light Workshops and DVDs (best investment EVER, by the way), is inspiring me today with this video: Dope, Soap, and Hope. Watch it. Really give yourself 6 minutes to listen and absorb, pretty please?

Sometimes the best thing for your brand is to let your heart lead, let yourself be vulnerable, let yourself feel all that life throws at you all at once.
