DOMINATRIXED: POSSIBILITY PARALYSIS

This is a dominatrixed post and assignment.  Click here if you missed the first one, you spiffy soul, you.

Today, we talk possibilities.  Like, you need to get breakfast for the kids while editing client photos while shopping for shoes online while watching the latest health report about the breakfast you’ve just finished feeding your kids on the Today Show.  Once the kids are out the door, you have a minute to yourself.

It’s business time, right?  It’s business time until you start considering all the things you could be doing with the next few hours.

You could be marketing with local vendors.  You could be blogging.  You could be shooting personal work.  You could be editing personal work.  You could be researching the virtues of content-aware fill in CS5.  You could be meeting with clients in person.  You could be mastering SEO or Marketing or Firestarting or…or…or…

There are so many things you could be doing that you end up watching CSI and blog-stalking from the comfort of your home in your pajamas.  I call this possibility paralysis.

You’re so overwhelmed by the 3.427 things you could be doing in your business that you do none of them.  This is not good for your business, and there’s a simple solution.  This week’s assignment:  choose three business tasks to complete for in the next seven days that are above and beyond your normal workload.

Make these tasks manageable, but push yourself a little.  Putting ‘Read SEO School‘ on your list is manageable.  Putting ‘Conquer SEO once and for all’ on your list only sets you up for failure.

Three tasks. No more, no less.  When the urge to do anything beyond them strikes, push it away.  Focus.  Don’t let yourself freak about all the things you’re choosing not to do.  And enjoy your business time.

Love this! I definitely suffer from Possibility Paralysis. I always feel like I’m spinning my wheels, doing a little here and a little there, but never really accomplishing what needs to be done. Great post and thanks for the video! :o )

O.M.G. You totally wrote this post directly for me. While wagging your finger and saying, “guuuurl, what you have you done with the to-do list that I gave you SEVEN freaking months ago?” Ahhhhhh, you are a breath of fresh air, Kristen. I’m off to make my list of 3 things. Right this very minute. Muuuuah.

Thanks for this. Last night I was an emotional wreck and definitely channeling the “I have so much to do….so I’m going to do everything BUT work!” Totally self-sabotaging. Today is a new day and I’m picking my three items!

By the way. I’ve finally got a website if you have time to look. I incorporated a lot of your ideas from our meeting way back when. Maybe I need to think “Dominatrix” in my near future??

I love this! I never end up doing nothing (babysitting time is too valuable for that!) but I definitely find thinking about all the possibilities overwhelming. I definitely find it helps to write them all down and then pick one to focus on at a time.

That is always sooo the problem. Mine is a combination of possibility meets guilt paralysis. I got stuff done today – so I consider this a win. =)

YES! Possibility Paralysis is what always gets me! That’s when I try and make a To Do list and stick to it. Now that I have a cute name for it, maybe it’ll be easier to conquer =)
